Today on Frankly Friday we’re going to bring you the instrumental Black Napkins by Frank Zappa.
This song originated on the Zoot Allures album and is all Frank, with his incendiary lead play and a cutting-edge tone. For those of you with Spotify here’s a live version from the Palladium in NYC on Halloween 1977. You’ll hear the use of fuzz to push the feel and he has a horn section joining to build the tension.
For those of you not using Spotify, we have a very different version below. Frank playing Black Napkins live along with The Mike Douglas Orchestra a year prior (1976). This version has a much different feel, an almost Jazz-like quality, and something befitting the Mike Douglas audience. Did we use the term virtuoso to describe Frank’s playing of the guitar? If not – then we just did.
If you don’t know Frank then we suggest stopping by on Frankly Friday and get to know him better!
