Welcome back and for Today in Grateful Dead History, we bring you a quality soundboard from the Grateful Dead Live at Winterland Arena on 11-9-1073. While this can be found as a show in the box set “Winterland 1973 Full Recordings” we have it for today to share! We LOVE shows from 1973 – the older tunes were comfort food for the soul and what was new would become the well-worn classics that we love today. The Wall of Sound was in development in this time period and we can hear it in the quality of the recording. In the mix of this tape, Bobby is very prominent, and you can really hear his playing and how complex and vital his rhythm is to the entire Band dynamic.
The Promised Land, Brown Eyed Women, Me & Bobby McGee, They Love Each Other, Black Throated Wind, Don’t Ease Me In, Mexicali Blues, Row Jimmy, The Race Is On, China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider, Playing In The Band
Here Comes Sunshine, Me And My Uncle, To Lay Me Down, Big River, Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleloo, Greatest Story Ever Told > Bertha, Weather Report Suite Prelude > Weather Report Suite Part 1 > Let It Grow > Eyes Of The World > China Doll, Around And Around, Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad > Johnny B. Goode, E: Uncle John’s Band
Brown Eyed Women seems to begin during the third verse, however, in the mix Bobby is very high and we must say that the best Jerry impersonator was and is Bobby! The Race is On makes an appearance in this first set along with first set China>Rider and a long and spacey Playin to close out the Set. The second Set begins with a building Here Comes Sunshine and great renditions of WRS, Eyes, Bertha – really an all around great show and one of the reasons we’ve selected it for our daily listen.
